Генерал, один из самых известных современных военных деятелей. В 1956 окончил Военное училище в Вест-Пойнте [West Point], в 1964 получил диплом магистра [master's degree] в Университете Южной Калифорнии [Southern California, University of]. Участник войны во Вьетнаме [Vietnam War]; в мае 1970 прошел через минное поле для спасения раненого солдата. После войны занимал различные посты в системе Министерства обороны [Department of Defense, U.S.]. С 1988 главнокомандующий Объединенного Центрального командования [Central Command, U.S.]. Стал широко известен во время войны в Персидском заливе [Gulf War], сыграв ведущую роль в разгроме иракских сил. Трижды награжден "Серебряной звездой" [Silver Star], а также орденом Доблестного легиона [Legion of Merit], "Пурпурным сердцем" [Purple Heart], "Бронзовой звездой" [Bronze Star Medal] и др. Автор мемуаров "Для этого герои не требуются" ["It Doesn't Take a Hero"] (1992).
